My JSU Story: Caitlyn Yongue, Cancer Researcher

"Cancer has affected many of my family members; however, one particular diagnosis impacted my life. When my mom was diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) in 2013, it was my first close encounter with cancer and the journey to recovery. After meeting many doctors, surgeons, and other people affected by cancer, this experience inspired me to help patients and families like my own. I am currently majoring in Pre-Health Professional Biology, and I plan on going to medical school to become a Surgical Oncologist. I have the amazing opportunity to be one of the first two students to ever perform cancer research at Jacksonville State University. I’m so thankful for the biology department and Dr. Hensley for allowing two sophomore to partake in such a tedious experiment. We will be growing cells, learning about them, and attempting to treat them with cannabinoids. I am beyond excited for the long road of research and experimentation that lies ahead. I chose this path at such a young age, and I’m grateful to JSU for allowing me to finally work towards a career I’m so passionate about!"
