How it Works

The Birmingham Promise Scholarship is applied towards the base cost of tuition, the general university fee, and course-related fees after federal, state, and institutional grants have been applied.
If a student receives a merit scholarship from Jacksonville State, that merit scholarship's value may be applied towards the cost of on-campus housing. Here is an example:

Estimated Tuition and Fee Costs (covered by BHP)
Tuition – $10,290
General University Fee – $1,650
Course Related Fees (varies by course) - $250 approx.
Total Tuition and Fees - $12,190 (estimate – course related fees vary by student course schedule)
Jax State Tuition and Fees
Jax State Financial Aid Office

Example of Grants and Birmingham Promise Values
Pell Grant - $7,395
State Grant - $1,000
Enhancement Grant - $500
Birmingham Promise Scholarship - $3,295 (calculated after grants were applied to tuition and general/course fees)

Additional Enrollment Costs (not covered by BHP)*
Housing and Meal Plan - $7,730 (merit scholarships can be applied towards this cost)
Other Fees – parking ($50/academic year), id fee (first free, then $30 if replacement needed), etc.
*These costs can be covered by Jax State scholarships, outside scholarships, and loans.
