Judge H. Dean Buttram, Jr. Scholarship in Pre-Law

Eligibility

A junior or senior who has maintained a 3.25 overall GPA in his or her undergraduate studies with a 3.5 GPA in his or her field of major study which includes: political science, history, psychology, English, business, criminal justice, and sociology.

Priority is given to students applying to an ABA accredited law school. Applicants for this scholarship are required to sit for the official LSAT in order to be considered for the scholarship. Students generally sit for the official LSAT in the summer following the completion of their junior year since students will apply to law school(s) in the fall of their senior year. The scholarship committee will review the applications following the release of the July LSAT scores. Official LSAT scores are viewable to the JSU Pre-law Advisor. If no student meets the requirements for the fall scholarship award, then the scholarship committee will review the fall official LSAT scores in November to award for the spring semester.

Students should apply for the scholarship in the fall of their junior year as they will likely sit for the official LSAT for the first time in spring of their junior year or the summer after completing their junior year.

If the recipient plans to graduate in the fall semester, the scholarship office will award the scholarship amount for the fall semester and there will be no recipient for the spring.

If the recipient plans to graduate in the spring semester, the scholarship office will award the scholarship amount in the fall and the scholarship amount in the spring to the chosen recipient.

The scholarship amount varies each year.

Students should begin taking the free, practice LSAT administered by JSU during their freshmen year in order to properly prepare for the official LSA T. Information on preparing for the LSAT and applying to law school is available from the office of Undergraduate Studies and Special Programs (USSP) in 107 Martin Hall or by visiting the Pre-Law website.
