BSW Program Requirements

Course Requirements and Sequencing
Students completing the BSW will be prepared for entry-level generalist social work practice. Introduction to Social Work (SW 330) is a prerequisite for all social work courses except for SW 300, 344, 365, 370, 371, and SW 380.  Students working on a BSW degree are not required to have a minor in another academic discipline.

REQUIREMENTS FOR BSW DEGREE

THE GENERAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BSW DEGREE
Total of 60 hours (Areas I through V below)

AREA I. WRITTEN COMPOSITION
EH 101and EH 102=6 hours

AREA II. HUMANITIES AND FINE ARTS
Two Literature Courses from the following: EH 201, 202, 203, 204, 219, or 220; EH 141, and one course from the Arts: ART 202, MU 233, FL 101, or DR 242=12 hours

AREA III. NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS
BY 101, 102, 103, and 104 plus MS 110 or 112=11 hours

AREA IV. HISTORY, SOCIAL, AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
HY 101 and HY 102 or HY 201 and HY 202; PSY 201; and SY 221=12 hours

AREA V. PRE-PROFESSIONAL, MAJOR, AND ELECTIVE COURSES
EC 221 or 222; PSC 100; MS 204; CS 201; one course from: FCS 215, HLT 212,
MSC 115, or PE 109; and 4 hours of General Electives=19 hours

The requirement for a BSW degree include 54 semester hours of social work courses (39 hours from required social work courses and 15 hours from social work elective courses) and at least 6 more hours of General Electives

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BSW DEGREE

A Bachelor of Social Work Degree requires a minimum of 120 hours for graduation.
University standards state a minimum of 36 hours must be courses numbered 300 level or above, however the Social Work degree requires a minimum of 54 hours of 300 level or above courses.
60 hours must be earned from a 4-year institution; 30 of which must be earned from JSU
Overall GPA must be 2.25; 2.50 GPA in Social Work
Pass the English Competency Exam; take the ETS Proficiency Profile (EPP); and complete the Exit Interview and Alumni Data Sheet
