Requirements for Major in Sociology

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science

  • 120 Credit Hours - meet all university and general education requirements
  • Thirty (30) credit hours of Sociology coursework ~ Fifteen (15) credit hours dictated by program and Fifteen (15) credit hours of sociology electives.
      • The five required sociology courses are SY 221 or 222301427 or 428, and 499 and one course from: SY 324360, or 368.
      • The additional fifteen (15) credit hours of sociology electives can be selected from only sociology courses and must be at 300 level of higher.
  • Second Major or a Minor
  • Sociology Majors must earn a minimum of “C” or better in each of the major and minor courses.
  • Mathematic requirements include one course of MS 108, Exploring Mathematics, or higher.

  • Minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours including SY 221/222 and SY 301
  • Required: SY 221 or 222, Introduction to Sociology, (3) credit hours
  • Fifteen (15) credit hours of sociology electives 

Requirements for Criminology Minor

  • Minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours including SY 221/222
  • Required: SY 221 or 222, Introduction to Sociology, (3) credit hours
  • Fifteen (15) credit hours of sociology electives from the following 

Requirements for Gerontology Minor

  • Minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours including SY 370 or SW 370 and SY 340 or SW 371
  • Required: SY 370 or SW 370, Aging and Human Development, (3) credit hours
  • Required: SY 340 or SW 371, Perspectives on Death and Dying, (3) credit hours
  • Twelve (12) credit hours of electives from the following
SY 360 - Race, Ethnicity & Society (3) SY 364 - Medicine and Society (3) SY 366 - Religion, Spirituality & Cults (3) SY 441/442/443 or SW 441, Independent Study (3)
SY 452 - Aging Practicum (3) SY 495 - Advanced Seminar in Aging (3) SW 335 - Social Work in Health Care (3) SW 344 - Community Engagement and Leadership (3)

Other items to note:

SY 221 or SY 222, Introduction to Sociology, is a prerequisite for all Sociology courses. 

SY 427428, and 499 have additional prerequisites. 

SY 301, Researching Society, should be taken prior to sociology 300+ electives.
