Student Organizations

The Sociology program at JSU has four active student organizations: The Sociology Club; WISE (Women's Issues, Support & Empowerment); JSU Students for Equality; and AKD (Alpha Kappa Delta). All serve similar, yet different functions on and off campus. Taken together, they all work toward unifying people, promoting social justice, as well as advocating for strong academic standards. Many students belong to several. Members of each organization have participated in academic conferences and performed volunteer work in the community, as well as sponsored campus and community events.

For questions regarding each of these organizations, contact faculty sponsors  Dr. Tina H. Deshotels.

Alpha Kappa Delta at JSU

In 1977, Dr. Rodney N. Friery began the process of establishing an AKD chapter, which was certified in 1978. Each chapter in each state is identified by a Greek letter in alphabetical order of the founding of that chapter within that state. The chapter at JSU was the seventh chapter in the state of Alabama, and was designated the "Eta" chapter. In 1978, 14 students were inducted. Since then, there have been over 200 student members.

JSU Students for Equality

JSU Students for Equality is committed to diversity and inclusion through providing resources and advocacy for students from historically marginalized populations.  Our goal is to help retain and recruit these students while enhancing their experiences through programming, workshops, support groups, education and social events.

The Sociology Club

The purpose of the sociology club is to promote professional, intellectual and personal growth, to encourage community consciousness by sponsoring activities of interest for students, to promote the ideas of serve and scholarship through the discipline of sociology, to cooperate with other organizations at JSU, to continually strive to serve the community and better understand the social forces shaping it.

WISE:  Women's Issues Support and Empowerment

Through education and activism we seek to connect individuals with solutions to the problems we face in order to create a more balanced world where women's issues are addressed, women are supported in their endeavors, and empowered to make changes in their lives and ultimately society.
