Professional Development Series

Working with people can be both difficult and rewarding.  It is essential for all professional employees to develop the skills necessary to effectively work with people here at JSU.  In order to provide guidance and best practices on how to work with students and colleagues, the Office of Veteran Services has developed the Professional Development Series for all JSU Faculty and Staff.  The series is comprised of three trainings that cover a variety of topics with a focus on our military-connected students.

De-escalating Conflict

There is a 100% chance that you will encounter conflict on and off the job.  Can you think of a time when you were faced with a conflict and you were not sure what to do?  We will help you identify new ways to think and respond to conflicting situations and help you to be better equipped to reduce the likelihood of a conflict in the future.

Identifying your Bias

How do your life experiences influence the choices you make today?  Is it human nature to be biased?  We will explore those questions and examine how biases alter our perception of the world.

Student Veteran Transitional Concerns

Every year, the amount of veterans entering higher education increases at an exponential rate.  There are issues student veterans face when transitioning from military service to college.  We will shed light on these issues, provide insight about the military culture, and inform you about different ways to support student veterans in a college setting.

Spring 2017 Training Schedule:

  1. De-escalating Conflict - Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 1-2 pm in Self Hall 207
  2. Identifying your Bias - Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 10-11 am in Self Hall 207
  3. Student Veteran Transitional Concerns - Monday, March 13, 2017 from 3-4 pm in Self Hall 207
