Flu Vaccines and COVID-19: September 29, 2021
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
As we head into cold and flu season, experts are expecting a possible “twindemic,” with communities fighting influenza and COVID-19 at the same time. Last year, COVID-19 prevention efforts – such as hand washing, masking and social distancing – resulted in a dramatic drop in flu cases across the globe. A historic increase in flu vaccinations also contributed to low flu activity.
What has changed for the upcoming flu season? Americans have returned to their offices and schools and are enjoying travel and group activities again. The flu is expected to return to normal numbers this year, and it’s entirely possible to contract both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.
So, what’s our best defense? Rolling up our sleeve and getting the vaccines. According to the CDC, it is not only safe to receive a flu shot if you’ve been vaccinated for COVID-19 – you can even get both vaccines at the same time. If your doctor approves, please consider getting your vaccines to protect yourself, your loved ones and our community.
The JSU Department of Nursing in the College of Health Professions and Wellness is hosting free clinics, offering both flu and COVID-19 vaccines to students, faculty, staff, and community members every Tuesday in October at Leone Cole Auditorium, 1-4 p.m. You can register online for an appointment on the following dates: Oct. 5, Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. For more information and FAQs about the flu vaccine, visit the CDC’s website.
