Where should you register?

Your voter registration is tied to where you live. As a college student, you can usually register to vote in either your hometown or where you attend college, depending on the residency requirements of your state.

Keep in mind: You can live in more than one place, but you are only allowed to vote in one.

Choosing between your hometown or your college town

If you are going to college in a different city than your hometown, here are things you might consider when deciding where to vote:

  • Which location is more convenient for you? 
  • Who is on the ballot in each place?
  • Are there local policies or particular issues that are important to you in either place?
Where you register to vote will not affect your federal financial aid, including FAFSA, Pell Grants, Perkins, or Stafford loans. It may affect whether you qualify for in-state tuition.

Confirm Your Status and Poll Location in Alabama

Just because you turned in a voter registration application does not necessarily mean you are registered to vote. Once your application has been processed by your local Board of Registrars, you should receive an acknowledgement from the Registrars indicating the status of your application. This acknowledgement will usually be a voter identification card confirming that you are registered to vote. However, if your application was incomplete, you may receive a letter requesting additional information to complete your application. If you are unsure about the status of your application, you can always call your local Board of Registrars or visit The Alabama Secretary of State's Polling Place and Registration Status page.

 

Alabama Requires an Approved Voter ID at the Polls

The approved forms of photo ID are listed on the Alabama Secretary of State's website. 

If a voter does not possess one of these, they may receive a free Alabama photo voter ID from various locations.
