Jax State Mourns the Passing of Former Vice President Dr. Henry Bascom Woodward III

Jacksonville State University is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Henry Bascom Woodward III, who dedicated more than four decades to serving the university and its students. Dr. Woodward passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 87.
Dr. Woodward joined Jax State in 1972 as the Director of Research and Planning, marking the beginning of a distinguished career with the institution that spanned over 40 years. His leadership roles included serving as Dean of Admissions and Continuing Education, Vice President for University Services, and ultimately, Vice President for Student Affairs. He was instrumental in shaping student life at Jax State, most notably overseeing the transition of the Department of Recreational Sports from the Physical Education Department to the Division of Student Affairs in 1984. Under his guidance, the division flourished, enhancing student services and engagement across campus.
Retiring in 1996, Dr. Woodward remained dedicated to education and Jax State, returning in 2000 to supervise student teachers. His mentorship and wisdom proved invaluable to aspiring educators, and his commitment to student success never wavered. His final adjunct contract concluded in 2014, bringing his long and impactful tenure at the university to a close.
Dr. Woodward’s warmth, wit, and unwavering dedication to others left an indelible mark on Jax State and the greater Jacksonville community. The university extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Jane Carothers Woodward, his children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him.
